There’s actually good news in the Citigroup numbers even if they have exposed one of the major flaws in the official stress test. Failing banks would need to raise just $20 billion in capital. That’s well short of the $75 billion that banks that failed the U.S. stress test needed to raise.

By gaining 23.58 points on Friday, the NASDAQ Composite closed above not just its 200-day moving average but also its July high of 2249.84.The next test is the June high at 2310. Then the current move has a chance to be more than just one of those 3-day bounces that have been so frustratingly frequent since April.

We’re just a little bit more than a week into earnings season and already some themes have started to emerge from the numbers. Nothing definite. Call them “tendencies.” But I’m finding connections among the results—and the investor reaction to the results. No big theoretical drum roll. No grand theory of everything. Just some exploitable trends as I see them that are emerging from the second quarter earnings numbers.

The market as a whole doesn’t look like its going anywhere until October or so. It’s time to look for companies moving now to strengthen themselves later even if investors right now don’t care.
