2019 goes out with a hurrah!

Today, December 31, all 11 of the sectors that make up the Standard & Poor's 500 closed higher for the year. That's the first time that's happened since 2010. For the year the S&P 500 itself gained 29%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 22.3%. The NASDAQ 100 was up 38% of the year, its […]

Special Report: 12 Bargain Stock Picks NOW–Pick #8 TWNK

Special Report: 12 Bargain Stock Picks NOW.  Pick No. 8 Hostess (TWNK) I can understand it if buying shares of Twinkie maker Hostess Brands (TWNK) doesn't immediately leap to mind. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and 2012 and the company that came out of that second episode is a classic Wall Street restucturing. […]

A lot of data for a short holiday week

Trading volumes will be low and investors attentions will be focused elsewhere than the financial markets, but this is a week with a surprising amount of market news. Tomorrow, Tuesday December 31, China announces the official Purchasing Managers Index for manufacturing. The version of the PMI from Caixin, which includes more reports from smaller, private […]

Saturday Night Quarterback says, For the week ahead expect…

...a short week of trading (duh!) without much going on (not even on the impeachment news front). But going into the new year, I'd advise watching the U.S. dollar. With optimism rising that the U.S. and China will at least reach a trade truce and that global trade will pick up in 2020, the dollar […]

Trick or Trend: Should all these jobs cuts worry investors?

Our regular (or occasional or perhaps occasionally regular) Friday series (actually running on Friday this week) Trick or Trend looks at what might (or might not) be emerging investible trends. Exclusively on JAM. This post won't run anywhere else. Ever. It's no surprise that the latest survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas showed […]

China sentences bank chairman to death for financial theft

And Wall Street thinks the Volcker Rule is too draconian. A Chinese court has sentenced the former chairman of struggling Hengfeng Bank to death--with a two-year reprieve. Good behavior during the reprieve period could see the sentence commuted to life in prison. Jiang Xiyun was convicted of moving 754 million yuan ($108 million) in Hengfeng […]

Little stock market movement by the close today is actually a good sign

The Standard & Poor's 500 closed dead even for today December 27. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was head just 008%. The NASDAQ Composite slipped 0.17% and the Russell 2000 small cap index was off 0.62%. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets EFT (EEM) was up by 0.40%. Some of the big winners this week showed […]

More stimulus on the way in China

It looks like looser monetary policy is on the way in China for 2020. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Monday the government will study further cutting bank reserve requirements in 2020. It's a good bet that the Premier would have raised the possible policy change if the government wasn't committed to moving in that direction. […]

U.S. consumers deliver the sugar plums for holiday shopping

Amazon (AMZN) reported today, December 26, that the holiday shopping season broke records for the company this year. Among other high-lights five million new customers started Prime free trials or paid memberships globally, and the number of items delivered with one-day or same-day shipping quadrupled compared to the 2018 holiday season.
