Autoliv beats on prospects for global auto recovery–but I think you’ve got better stocks to play this trend

Autoliv (ALV) reported third quarter earnings per share of either $1.48 (non-GAAP) or $1.12 (GAAP). (GAAP is generally accepted accounting principles) . That consensus was $1.09 a share on Wall Street. Revenue of $2.04 billion was in line with expectations and up 0.5% year over year. For the full 2020 year the company said it […]

Danaher blows out earnings again–raising target price

Shares of Danaher (DHR) were up just 3.28% today. I say "just" because the company delivered a blow out earnings report today. Danaher reported adjusted earnings of $1.72 per share on $5.88 billion in sales for its third quarter. Analysts had expected earnings of $1.37 a share. Revenue beat analyst estimates of $5,52 billion. Earnings […]

Weekly new claims for unemployment dips–a bit

New claims for unemployment in regular state programs fell to 787,000 last week. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had been expecting 875,000 for the week ended October 17. The total showed a drop of 55,000 from the revised figure of 842,000 for the prior week. The weekly figure was the lowest total since October 3 and the […]

Some coronavirus stimulus math from the Senate–there are almost no Republican votes for a big new package

From the Washington Post today: "Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) put Senate GOP antipathy to a deal costing between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion in stark terms. “The dimensions of what they’re talking about today, I don’t think there are 13 Republicans for it. That’s my assessment based on the math,” Thune said Wednesday." With just […]

Buying Nvidia today for my long-term 50 Stocks Portfolio

On October 15 I noted that the hike in revenue guidance from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) on huge demand for its chips in AI and gaming (among other sectors) was good news for gaming, AI, and data center leader Nvidia (NVDA.) And I hinted at buying shares in Nvidia before that company reports earnings for […]

Odds of coronavirus stimulus bill before November 3 elections fall as Senate fails to advance Republican $500 billion package

Today, Wednesday, October 21, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continued to express optimism that she and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin would be able to reach a deal on another big coronavirus relief and stimulus package--although a bill is unlikely before election day on November 3. And, also today, the Senate, predictably, failed to pass a scale […]

Tomorrow, October 21, I’m adding Puts on iron producer Vale on likely increase in global supply surplus

Brazil's iron ore giant Vale (VALE)  reported on Monday, October 19, that it produced more iron ore than expected in the third quarter due to record volumes from newer mines in northern Brazil. This comes just ahead of a seasonal slowdown in demand from China. The company reported third-quarter production of 88.7 million metric tons, […]

McConnell urges White House not to strike a coronavirus stimulus deal with Peolosi

Even if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin reach a deal on a new coronavirus rescue and stimulus package sometime in the next week or two, it will die in the Senate if Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has anything to say about it. Today at a private meeting with other Republican Senators, […]

Netflix earnings disappoint after the close today

Netflix (NFLX) shares fell 5.42% in after-hours trading (after closing 1% lower in the regular session) after the company reported additions to paid subscribers the missed estimates and lower guidance for the rest of 2020. Revenue for the company's third quarter was $6.44 billion against projections for $6.39 billion. Earnings, though, were $1.74 a share […]
