Notes You Need for January 8: Nvidia, GPRO, Amazon, Facebook, BLUE

In my daily trawling through the market I come upon lots of tidbits of knowledge that I think are important to investors but that don’t justify a full post. I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. Posts resemble this from today: “11:40 a.m.: It’s almost earnings season so it’s time for Wall Street analysts to raise target price forecasts on high visibility stocks so they won’t be left behind on any post-earnings spike. Today Credit Suisse raised its target on Amazon (AMZN) to $1410 from $1385 and Robert W. Baird raised its target to $1310 from $1100. The stock traded at $1245 at 11:40 today. Amazon will announce fourth quarter earnings on February 1. And on the Facebook front Credit Suisse raised its forecast to $232 from $230. the stock traded at $188 today.”

The digital assistant wars heat up at the Consumer Electronics Show

The digital assistant wars heat up at the Consumer Electronics Show

For the first time in years Alphabet (AKA Google) will have a booth at the biggest U.S. showplace for new consumer electronics, the Consumer Electronics Show that runs from January 7 through January 12 in Las Vegas. The goal this time won’t be urging early adopting consumers to try the latest Google gadget. The point this year is to get developers at other companies to join the Google Assistant camp instead of teaming up to work with Amazon’s (AMZN) Alexa or Apple’s (AAPL) Siri or voice assistants from Roku or LG or Samsung or Baidu (BIDU) or …

In my daily trawling through the market I come upon lots of tidbits of knowledge that I think are important to investors but that don’t justify a full post. I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. A typical post resembles this from today: “11:40 a.m.: Global debt rose to a record $233 trillion in the third quarter of 2017, more than $16 trillion higher than at the end of 2016, according to the Institute of International Finance. Private non-financial sector debt hit all-time highs in Canada, France, Hong Kong, South Korea, Switzerland and Turkey. Thanks to global economic growth, though, the ratio of debt-to-gross domestic product fell for the fourth consecutive quarter. The ratio is now around 318%, 3 percentage points below a high set in the third quarter of 2016.”

In my daily trawling through the market I come upon lots of tidbits of knowledge that I think are important to investors but that don’t justify a full post. I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. A typical post resembles this from today: “2:40 p.m.: Technology analysts are expecting Alphabet (GOOG) to make a big splash at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The likelihood is that Alphabet will promote Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones, the Google Home Mini smart speaker, and the new Daydream View VR headset. New Chromebooks to follow up on the PixelBook are also a strong possibility.”

Saturday Night Quarterback says, For the next week expect…

Saturday Night Quarterback says, For the next week expect…

A very heavy week for earnings will reach a crescendo on Thursday, November 2 with reports from Alibaba and Apple. The excitement isn’t surprising after the huge earnings that Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), and Intel (INTC) delivered this past Thursday, October 26. This week Facebook (FB) is the Wednesday, November 1,  warmup act.

How’s your portfolio doing in this “elephant” market?

How’s your portfolio doing in this “elephant” market?

For 2017 though the end of September, the FANG stocks–Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google (Alphabet)–and friends such as Apple and Microsoft have contributed 29% of gains in developed economy stock markets. Pretty hefty concentration, you say. But, if your looking for a market really dominated by elephants shift your gaze to emerging markets.

Tech breakdown starts to look serious

Tech breakdown starts to look serious

The conventional wisdom at the end of last week was that we were witnessing a rotation out of tech shares and into financials and small cap stocks. In other words, nothing to get  too concerned about. Apple (AAPL) was a special case as surveys of retail channels showed weak sales for the iPhone 8. Today, though, the concern is a bit more serious.

Notes You Need for August 24: Hurricane Harvey, Apple TV, Fed balance sheet, Amazon cuts Whole Food prices, natural gas

Times listed are when I wrote the specific post (New York time.)

10:20 a.m.: The worst storm to hit the oil refineries on the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Wilma in 2005 is on a track to come ashore near Corpus Christi, Texas, on Friday. Hurricane Harvey with its 85 mile an hour winds and drenching rain is likely to disrupt gasoline production and curtail oil and natural gas demand. U.S. crude benchmark West Texas Intermediate closed down 1.63% today. Gasoline, on the other hand, rose 2.35% on anticipation that the storm will curtail supply. 10:40 a.m.: The usual reliable but unnamed sources have said that in September Apple (AAPL) will announce a new Apple TV set-top box that will include a faster processor capable of streaming higher-resolution 4K video. Apple is also said to be testing an updated version of its TV app that can aggregate programming from apps that already offer live streaming.

Notes You Need for August 23: Amazon vs Google/Wal-Mart, Brazil, Electrobras, sector rotation

10:20 a.m.: Alphabet (GOOG) and Wal-Mart (WMT) are teaming up to fight Amazon (AMZN). Shoppers will be able buy Wal-Mart products on Google Express using, the partners hope, the voice-controlled Google Home and Google Assistant on Android smartphones. You can tell how deeply this partnership concerned the market: Shares of Amazon closed down 0.92% in the regular trading session and then climbed 0.23% in after hours action. 10:40 a.m.: The Brazilian government will sell a controlling stake in Latin America’s biggest electricity generator, Electrobras.
