Today’s Quick Pick is CVS Health (CVS). CVS owns a unique combination of healthcare delivery channels. Drugstores, yes–9,000 of them. But the company also owns health insurance company, Aetna, and Caremark, the largest pharmacy benefit manager. And recently it moved into the primary care marketplace through its acquisition of Oak Street. The company reported earnings on Wednesday, February 7, and the stock was up about 3.25% after that. While the earnings were good, (they beat by $0.13) the guidance is what is important here. The company projected higher costs for 2024 and cut guidance for GAAP earnings ($7.06) and adjusted earnings ($8.30). The reason the stock went up despite these cuts is that everyone was expecting DEEPER cuts to guidance. CVS has been signaling for weeks that rising costs in 2024 could be painful for the healthcare sector as a whole, and the relatively minor cuts in guidance led to a rally in the stock. Morningstar calculates a fair value for CVS Health of $103 a share. The stock closed at $76.32 on February 9. The stock also pays a 2.36% dividend. The stock is a member of my Dividend Portfolio. That position is up 31.25% since October 28, 2020.

Artificial intelligence really is a paradigm-breaking, transformative technology. Right now, investors are so enthusiastic about the sector, especially the obvious leader Nvidia (NVDA), that we’re looking at a potential bubble that will collapse with much gnashing of teeth and I-told-you-so “wisdom” casting doubt on the reality of the entire endeavor. I think a bubble is indeed possible. Nvidia did trade at a trailing twelve-month price-to-earnings ratio of 196 on May 31, after all. But I think you do want to own the sector now–because the breaking of the bubble, if it does break is, in my opinion, two quarters or more away. And you want to own the sector for the long run–say, 10 years or more–because it is such a game changer for so much of the economy. But what to own? I’ve put together a list of the 10 stocks that I think are the best way to participate in the AI gold rush.

You can understand the gold rush: One AI stock is up 105% (and 78% in the last month) in 2023 as of the February 17 close.
But are shares of that company, the software artificial company C3A (AI), the stock you want to own, or is this stock simply a beneficiary of hot money jumping on anything that sounds like artificial intelligence? As one market observer put it on Seeking Alpha recently, “The ticker is more valuable than the company.” This doesn’t mean that the current revolution in artificial intelligence isn’t real. And here I give you my 7 picks for investing in the latest AI revolution

After a big week of tech earnings news, stocks and investors will move onto fourth quarter 2022 earnings for consumer stocks, health care, and a little taste of fintech.

What now? I’ve been working to play defense in this Bear Market before there was even a Bear Market. Back in December, I added a drug stock, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY) to my Jubak Picks Portfolio because it looked like Big Pharma was getting dollars from investors and traders looking for safe havens.
In February I added oil and natural gas, ahead of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And since then I’ve added ETFs that track agricultural commodities. An ETF based on the U.S. dollar. And inverse ETFs that are designed to go up when prices in emerging markets or the small-cap sector of the U.S.market do down. And, of course, I’ve been selling: early on consumer stocks that looked vulnerable to inflation and recession and more recently technology stocks with exposure to China and the U.S./China trade war. But WHAT NOW? Here’s where I see investors and the market to be right now.

After yesterday’s selling, we’re getting a bounce today. But, significantly, the bounce in stocks is much less “bouncy” than the Monday bounce from Friday’s plunge.

On October 27 I made CVS Health (CVS) one of my "10 Stocks for a post coronavirus world" and declared that it was the only one of the first group of five stocks that I'd buy now--even though the market looked potentially volatile. I cited the stock's 3.57% dividend as...

Before the coronavirus pandemic, I used to eat breakfast a couple of times a week at the Manchester Diner a few blocks from my house. Then one day the diner just closed. Common enough in New York City where small local restaurants can go out of business over night...

Yikes. Does this market have enough volatility for you? And I think that volatility will only get worse over the next two to six months, I can't remember a market with so much potential to move up or down in big relatively short-term volatility as this one. Just as...
