Initial claims for unemployment drop for the week

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 210,000 for the week ended March 16, the Labor Department reported today, March 21. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 215,000 claims in the latest week. Continuing claims for unemployment increased 4,000 to 1.807 million during the week ending March 9, the report on Thursday showed. The Federal Reserve has been looking for signs that the labor market is weakening before raising interest rates. So far the evidence is inconclusive.

New claims for unemployment climb to three-month high

More news this morning pointing to a slowing economy. Initial claims for unemployment for the past week rose 13,000 to 231,000, the Labor Department Reported this morning. That’s the highest weekly figure in three months. And is yet another sign that the economy is cooling. Which would encourage the Federal Reserve to call an end to it interest rate increases and, maybe even, start to cut rates relatively soon. At least that’s how the bond market read the numbers.

The likelihood is that Alphabet will promote Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones, the Google Home Mini smart speaker, and the new Daydream View VR headset. New Chromebooks to follow up on the PixelBook are also a strong possibility.”

I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. A typical post looks much like this entry from today: “10:20 a.m.: Cook County, the county that includes Chicago, has announced a lawsuit against makers of prescription opioid painkillers such as OxyContin and Percocet. The lawsuit cites the companies’ “coordinated, sophisticated, and highly deceptive marketing.” Cook County has seen a 70% increase in opioid-related deaths between 2015 and 2016.”

Today’s items include this one: “10:40 a.m.: Alphabet’s (GOOG) investment arm, CapitalG, has led a $1 billion round of investment in Lyft. The new round values Lyft at $11 billion. The funding is significant since Alphabet has been a big supporter of Uber and this investment suggests that Alphabet’s Waymo autonomous vehicle unit will work more closely with Lyft.”
