Watch My New YouTube Video: Hot Button Moves NOW–AI Woodstock

Today’s Hot Button Moves NOW video is AI Woodstock. Nvidia’s big AI update on March 18 has been dubbed “AI Woodstock” by Bank of America. Nvidia will update its pipeline and prospects for new projects and report on where it sees the AI market going. It will likely create volatility throughout the AI sector as investors try to get out ahead of the company’s projections. Tuesday, Bank of America raised its target price for Nvidia from $925 to $1100 and upped its estimate of the size of the AI accelerator market from under $250 billion to $250-500 billion in 3-5 years. This wide gap in both market size and time makes me a little nervous, but for now we can focus on the next few days. Nvidia will be discussing its new B1000 and N100 chips, ethernet switches, and AI at the Edge for PCs and smartphones. Keep an eye on stocks like Broadcom (AVGO), Qualcomm (QCOM) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) for reaction to this news. The volatility in the reaction could open up a good place to get in on these AI stocks.

Today’s Quick Pick is Qualcomm, (QCOM). I always look for product momentum in technology stocks, and Qualcomm’s pipeline is very promising. The company reported a good first quarter for 2024 but I’m focused on growth for their Snapdragon chip which is used in cell phones, cars, and the internet of things. Qualcomm has recently renewed its chip agreements with Apple and Samsung. Samsung’s Galaxy 24 is the first cell phone to include AI technology powered by Snapdragon and sales are up 13% year over year from 2023 and 47% from 2024. It’s likely more companies will be looking to add AI to their phones and I think Qualcomm has a leading position in that market. A new Snapdragon product, X-Elite, will put AI on PCs and is coming out this year. In 2023 the Snapdragon chip was also installed in infotainment modules for 75 new car models and the company’s automotive revenue is up about 12% this quarter. The Internet of Things is growing more slowly but is still growing. Morningstar says the stock is trading at a 22% premium, but I find that to be very, very conservative. While this stock isn’t a bargain at the moment this is a decent time to get in on an AI stock with promising pipeline momentum, and I don’t see it being more reasonable any time soon. I added Qualcomm to my Jubak’s Picks Portfolio on January 15, 2024. The position is up 23.5% since then as of the close on March 12.

GREATER Growth Stock Pick #10: Qualcomm (QCOM). I think the market and the current stock price are missing a good prt of the growth story for Qualcomm. Which is why I find the stock undervalued enough to buy here. Right now the market disagrees. However, I’ll be adding the stock to my Jubak Picks and Volatility Portfolios on Tuesday, January 16.

Good news for chip stocks–well, for some chip stocks

In November global chip sales rose for the first time in more than a year. Global semiconductor revenue added up to $48 billion in November, a 5.3% increase from a year earlier, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. Sales rose a more moderate 2.9% from October. But the good news didn’t extend to all chip segments.

Today I posted my two-hundred-and-twenty-second YouTube video: Caution! Technology Margin Shake-Up Ahead!

This starts off as an Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) story. Apple recently announced that it would be moving away from using Broadcom (AVGO) chips for Wifi and Bluetooth in its iPhones, and begin using its own chips in 2023. This will of course make for better margins for Apple and speed up the company’s ability to implement new technology. This is a big blow for Broadcom which relies on Apple for 20% of its revenue. Apple also announced it’ll be moving away from QUALCOMM as they project it will have Apple chips to replace the QUALCOMM modem chips by late 2024-2025. (We’ve heard this before. And Apple had to call off the switch because of technology glitches.) You can expect more technology (and other) companies to shake up their own product designs and supply chains as they look at inflation and costs. Corporate profits have been at historic highs protecting profit margins at current levels won’t be easy.

Special Report–10 Perfect Picks: A Different Kind of Perfect Stock for Long-term Investors in a Different Market with first 6 Picks (LNG,FQVLF, ALB, GM (gasp) FREY, and QCOM)

Is there such a thing as a perfect stock? Depends. Not a chance, if you mean a stock that will be perfect in every market for every time period. No way, if you mean a stock that will go up steadily from the day you buy it. Nah, if you mean a “Buy and Hold Forever Stock.” But there are stocks that are “perfect” for a specific kind of market. And there are stocks that are “perfect” for a specific holding period. And there are stocks that are “perfect” for investors with a specific portfolio goal. And in this Special Report, I’m going to give you 10 of those Perfect Picks.

Another chip maker–this time is Micron–warns and chip stock take a hit

First, it was Nvidia (NVDA) cutting its guidance for revenue and earnings due on August 24. Today, August 9, it was Micron Technology (MU) warning that its revenue for the fourth-quarter revenue may come in at or below the bottom end of a forecast range provided in the company’s earnings call on June 30. Micron is scheduled to report on September 27. All this comes as the market is on edge anyway ahead of tomorrow’s report on CPI inflation. As of the close on Tuesday, August 9, shares of Micro Technology were down 3.74%. Shares of Nvidia were down another 3.97% after closing down 6.30% yesterday.

Rally or rotation? I vote for rotation

In the last week Technology stocks, and chip stocks in particular, have staged a very impressive rally off of a really low base. Nvidia (NVDA), for example, is up 17.43% in the week that ended on July 21. That still leaves the stock down 39.43% for the year. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is up 15.36% in the last week. And it’s still down 37.85% for 2022. Qualcomm (QCOM) is up 1.85% for the week. And down 16.26% for the year. Impressive. But I’d be more inclined to see this as a sustainable rally if stocks were rising across the board–with tech and chips leading the way, perhaps.
Instead what I’m seeing is a rotation from safe and less risky stocks

Smartphone forecasts suggest investors are right to worry about technology earnings this year

Smartphone forecasts suggest investors are right to worry about technology earnings this year

Analysts at New York investment house Cowen now expect worldwide mobile phone shipments this year to decline by 6% from a year ago to 1.36 billion. In 2023, the company projects shipments will dip by another 2% to 1.33 billion units. Perhaps most worrying for investors is Cowen’s analysis of where the market problems lie: In weakness in the high-end smartphone market.
