Saturday Night Quarterback (Part 2) says, For the week ahead expect…

Investors see a ton of third-quarter earnings reports this coming week with news from Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Alphabet quite capable of moving the entire market. We’ll also get more consumer company (Coca-Cola and Kimberly-Clark for example) reports to show whether last week’s higher revenue but lower volume pattern continues. And Wall Street is expecting negative new from oil companies ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) when they both report on Friday.

Wall Street has second thoughts on yesterday’s Microsoft earnings

Yesterday, shares of Microsoft (MSFT) rose by more than 4.6% on an earnings report for the December quarter that showed the company slightly beating analyst estimates on earnings and training only slightly on revenue. Today, investors and traders had second thoughts. The stock was down as much as 4.6% in morning trading (That’s down from the close yesterday and not from the after-hours price.) The stock ended the day down just 059% but that was enough to erase all the after-hours gains from the previous day. So what caused the second thoughts?

Microsoft beats on earnings but Azure growth slows more than expected

After the market close today, Microsoft (MSFT) announced earnings of $2.32 a share, just beating Wall Street forecasts of $2.30 a share. That was a 6.5% drop from the December 2021 quarter, however. Revenue missed expectations at $52.7 billion versus a forecasted $52.9 billion. But the big news was that revenues for Azure, the company’s key cloud computing software unit, rose just 31% year over year in the quarter. That badly trailed Wall Street forecasts that called for 36.8% year-over-year growth in the December quarter.

Saturday Night Quarterback says, For the week ahead expect…

I expect technology earnings to hold center stage as investors and traders wait for the Federal Reserve to speak on interest rates next week on Wednesday, February 1. I think what companies say about expectations for revenue and earnings for the first quarter of 2023 will be more likely to move stocks significantly than what they report for the fourth quarter.

Will Netflix earnings on Thursday shock the market?

Will Netflix earnings on Thursday shock the market?

Right now Wall Street analysts project that on Thursday, January 19, Netflix (NFLX) will report earnings of just 44 cents a share for the fourth quarter of 2022. That would be a huge drop from the $1.33 the company reported in the fourth quarter of 2021. If Netflix reports as expected, will the stock market shudder lower? After all, the Netflix results would be very similar to the negative reports from the big banks so far this earnings season. And it might foreshadow disappointing earnings from the technology companies that began reporting on January 24 with Microsoft (MSFT). Probably not. Although I think it should.

Saturday Night Quarterback says, For the week ahead expect…

This week brings an interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve (75 basis point increase?), market reaction to the Russian attack on Ukraine’s major grain port, and earnings from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple. Here’s my preview of what we might see–or at least what to look for–this week.

Saturday Night Quarterback says, For the week ahead expect…

The big excitement for earnings season is over. Lots of companies will report this coming week but no reports that will move markets like Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook. In the absence off earnings excitement, financial markets will have plenty of time to fret about the March 16 Federal Reserve meeting and the likelihood that the central bank will raise niters rates.

What happens when/if the Federal Reserve does nothing, says (almost) nothing tomorrow?

What happens when/if the Federal Reserve does nothing, says (almost) nothing tomorrow?

At the moment, Wall Street is memorized by tomorrow’s meeting of the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate setting body, the Open Market Committee. The meeting is almost certain to result in no action on interest rates or Treasury purchases or balance sheet draw downs. The Fed likes to announce policy actions at meetings replete with economic updates (the Dot Plot) and press setups. Those are missing at this meeting and present for the March 16 meeting. That’s the date when we’re likely to see the Fed actually do something. So what happens when the Fed does nothing and says nothing?

IBM beats–Will BIG TECH earnings stabilize stocks? Next to watch Microsoft today

Last night after the close of trading, IBM (IBM) reported earnings (excluding one-time items) of $3.35 a share for the December quarter. Analysts were looking for $3.23. Gross margin was 56.9%, beating the 56.1% analysts expected. Which leads to the important question of whether BIG TECH earnings and revenue reports, due in the next week, will stabilize stock prices/
