I’m sure you’ve noticed. The technology sector, which led the stock market rally in 2023 and in the early days of 2024, is in a slump. The Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) tumbled 6.27% last week and is down 7.16% in the last month. For 2024 to date, as of the close on April 19, the sector is at break even with gain of 0.19%. Quite a turnabout for a sector that is still up 30% for the last 12 months. This week brings a raft of tech earnings that could turn the sector’s trend around. Or not.

Today’s Quick Pick is Qualcomm, (QCOM). I always look for product momentum in technology stocks, and Qualcomm’s pipeline is very promising. The company reported a good first quarter for 2024 but I’m focused on growth for their Snapdragon chip which is used in cell phones, cars, and the internet of things. Qualcomm has recently renewed its chip agreements with Apple and Samsung. Samsung’s Galaxy 24 is the first cell phone to include AI technology powered by Snapdragon and sales are up 13% year over year from 2023 and 47% from 2024. It’s likely more companies will be looking to add AI to their phones and I think Qualcomm has a leading position in that market. A new Snapdragon product, X-Elite, will put AI on PCs and is coming out this year. In 2023 the Snapdragon chip was also installed in infotainment modules for 75 new car models and the company’s automotive revenue is up about 12% this quarter. The Internet of Things is growing more slowly but is still growing. Morningstar says the stock is trading at a 22% premium, but I find that to be very, very conservative. While this stock isn’t a bargain at the moment this is a decent time to get in on an AI stock with promising pipeline momentum, and I don’t see it being more reasonable any time soon. I added Qualcomm to my Jubak’s Picks Portfolio on January 15, 2024. The position is up 23.5% since then as of the close on March 12.
February 23, 2024 | Daily JAM, Long Term, NVDA, Top 50 Stocks |
Yesterday, Thursday, February 22, Nvidia (NVDA) gained 16.40% at the close after beating Wall Street expectations on earnings and revenue after the market close on Wednesday. And then raising guidance for the rest of 2024. But what most interested me on Thursday were what tech stocks Nvidia carried higher with it–and which stocks it didn’t.

Well, optimistic analysts just weren’t optimistic enough about Nvidia’s (NVDA) fourth quarter 2023 earnings. The company reported adjusted earnings of $5.16 per share on revenue of $22.1 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of $4.60 a share and revenue of $20.4 billion.

After yesterday’s earnings report–the company beat Wall Street estimates for the quarter–and radically lower guidance for next quarter and the rest of 2024–total billings for next quarter will grow by just 2% to 4% and revenue for all of 2024 will grow by just 15% to 16% from 2023–shares of Palo Alto Networks (PANW) took a big hit right between the eyes. The stock fell 28.44% at the close and lost $104.12 a share to $261.97. What do I recommend? I’d say “buy” with a couple of caveats. Why buy?

Now that Fed day is done and behind us, we return to our regularly scheduled programming. Back on September 15, I posted “A tough day for tech–Part 1” after news on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) reporting that the company was slowing orders with suppliers of chip making equipment because of sluggish demand for chips from its customers. Now onto Part 2 of bad news for tech stocks.

They’re still talking. Which is good. It looks like there might be a deal. Which is good. It would be based on kicking all the tough line item decisions on what programs to cut down the road to the August and September budget and appropriations process in Congress.

Shipments by all PC makers slumped 29% in the first quarter to a level below that in early 2019, according to tech market analysts at IDC. Lenovo Group and Dell Technologies registered drops of more than 30%, while HP (HPQ) was down 24.2%. No major brand was spared from the slowdown, with Asustek Computer Inc. rounding out the top 5 with a 30.3% fall. But Apple (AAPL)let the plunge with personal computer shipments down by 40.5% in the first quarter.

In Step #3 of my Special Report: 5 Moves for the Next 5 Months, on March 24 I added three Big Tech stocks–Microsoft (MSFT), Adobe (ADBE), and Nvidia (NVDA) to my Volatility Portfolio ahead of earnings season. My theory, explained in that post was that we were facing a tough earnings season for most stocks and that reliable earnings growth from Big Tech would make those stocks look like a safe haven in a period when the Standard & Poor’s 500 as a whole was projected to show a drop in earnings. (I also owned up to my mistake in selling Nvidia back on February 16. That was just wrong. More on why I was wrong and why I’ve changed my mind on that in a post tomorrow or so.)

Ok, so Dan Ives is talking his book (or sector at least) but he still raises an interesting point. (Dan Ives is a Managing Director and Senior Equity Research Analyst covering the Technology sector at Wedbush Securities since 2018.) With bank stocks in particular and the financial sector in general in turmoil, will investors looking for steady earnings turn to tech stocks? (Well maybe not all tech stocks but how about Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT)?
