After last week’s defeat of the American Health Care Act, the looming battle over funding the U.S. government past the April 28 deadline is critical. If the package that finally passes doesn’t include anything from the Trump administration’s wish list, then I think a financial market that has climbed on a belief in a big corporate tax cut and some kind of infrastructure plan, will start to lose some of the “animal spirits” that have driven U.S. stocks higher.

Wall Street heard what it wanted to hear from President Donald Trump in his address to a joint session of Congress last night. Or to be more precise it didn’t hear anything it didn’t want to hear. Trump waved in the direction of cutting regulations, repealing Obamacare, cutting taxes, and spending more on the military, education, and infrastructure.

Tomorrow morning we’ll see if Trump said enough about the subjects near and dear to Wall Street’s heart–less regulation of the financial sector and lower corporate taxes–to keep the post-Trump-victory rally going. But the real important reaction, the one that I’ll be watching most closely will come from the Federal Reserve
