What to sell in a Bear Market rally–and two sells for Monday, Omnicom and Alcoa

I ended my recent post “This looks like the Bear Market rally I’ve been waiting for” on my subscription JubakAM.com site by saying “Enjoy the ride but look to sell shares of companies that look most exposed to the return of recession/high interest rates/inflation worries. That post had been up for all of 18 minutes before I got the perfectly reasonable question “Like what?” And I promised an answer so here are my preliminary thoughts on what I’d look to sell in a Bear Market rally

Special Report: “5 new economies that will shape the future and 10 stock picks for investing in that future NOW” Part 1: The battery economy with 3 stock picks

I’m starting my Special Report on “5 new economies that will shape the future” with the Battery Economy because 1) it’s important on its own, and 2) it has the power to reshape so much of the macro economy. And that last “because” makes the “Battery Economy” an ideal example of what these 5 new “little” economies are all about and why they’re so important to the future growth of your portfolio.

Closing all of my Options hedges in the Volatility Portfolio; holding off until January or February to add new downside protection

Closing all of my Options hedges in the Volatility Portfolio; holding off until January or February to add new downside protection

Stock have moved up so strongly that the Put Options I own in my Volatility Portfolio are no longer providing any significant downside protection against a market downturn. Especially since two of the three–the Puts on MGM Resorts International, and Vale l expire on December 18. The last Put, the one on American Airlines, expires on January 15, 2021, but I’m closing that position as well.  I’m also selling my two Call Options on Barrick Gold, and the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF since they also expire on December 18 and they are also so far out of the money the holding is pointless. Those Calls on gold were also added as protection against an outbreak in market volatility that never arrived.

Notes You Need for October 19: Initial claims, Lyft and Google, Vale, iPhone8 sales, Black Monday anniversary

In my daily trawling through the market I come upon lots of tidbits of knowledge that I think are important to investors but that don’t justify a full post. I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. Today’s items include this one: “10:40 a.m.: Alphabet’s (GOOG) investment arm, CapitalG, has led a $1 billion round of investment in Lyft. The new round values Lyft at $11 billion. The funding is significant since Alphabet has been a big supporter of Uber and this investment suggests that Alphabet’s Waymo autonomous vehicle unit will work more closely with Lyft.”
