I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. A typical entry would resemble this from today: “10:20 a.m.: Apple (AAPL) shares down 2% this morning on news reports out of Japan that the company will lower iPhone X production volume by 50% in the first quarter of calendar 2018. The stories see that Apple has notified suppliers that it will cut production for January-March quarter to 20 million units for the iPhone X instead of the 40 million units projected at the phone’s November release. Apple reports earnings after the market close on Wednesday, February 1.”

A typical items resembles this from today: “4:20 p.m.: The U.S. Dollar Index gave up a morning gain to fall back to 90.32 before rallying again to close at 90.736, up 0.34 on the day. Some analysts think that the 90 level on the index might give support to the U.S. currency against other major currencies. Others think the dollar is on the verge of falling to a new thee-year low that could open the way to further declines.”

A typical item resembles this one from today: “10:20 a.m.: Shares in Eastman Kodak (KODK) are up 58% this morning after the former camera and film leader said it would launch the Kodakcoin, “a photocentric cryptocurrency to empower photographers and agencies to take greater control in image rights management.” Kodak, which emerged from bankruptcy in 2013, has sold off most of its patents and now focuses on digital photography and printing.”

Today I’ve seen higher target prices for MGM Resorts International (MGM), up to $4 from $41; Microsoft (MSFT), up to $115 from $100; and Charles Schwab (SCHW), up to $60 from $52. I’ve also seen lower targets for Allegan (AGN), down to $215 from $230; and Alibaba (BABA), down to $219 from $221.”

I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. Posts resemble this from today: “11:40 a.m.: It’s almost earnings season so it’s time for Wall Street analysts to raise target price forecasts on high visibility stocks so they won’t be left behind on any post-earnings spike. Today Credit Suisse raised its target on Amazon (AMZN) to $1410 from $1385 and Robert W. Baird raised its target to $1310 from $1100. The stock traded at $1245 at 11:40 today. Amazon will announce fourth quarter earnings on February 1. And on the Facebook front Credit Suisse raised its forecast to $232 from $230. the stock traded at $188 today.”

Private non-financial sector debt hit all-time highs in Canada, France, Hong Kong, South Korea, Switzerland and Turkey. Thanks to global economic growth, though, the ratio of debt-to-gross domestic product fell for the fourth consecutive quarter. The ratio is now around 318%, 3 percentage points below a high set in the third quarter of 2016.”

New Chromebooks to follow up on the PixelBook are also a strong possibility.”

I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need.  A typical item resembles this from today: “10:40 a.m.: Ahead of earnings Barclays raised its target on U.S. Bancorp (USB) to $65 from $60. Stock was trading at $53.38 at the open. Before Christmas, December 17, to be precise UBS downgraded the bank stock to neutral from buy (while raising its target price to $60 from $58.) The downgrade reflects a shift to favor banks with a higher exposure to tax cuts in the recently passed tax bill.”

Typical items resemble this post from today: “10:40 a.m.: Softbank Group along with Tencent Holdings, Sequoia Capital and Dragoneer Investment Group are buying existing shares in Uber from current shareholders. In addition Softbank will buy $1.25 billion in new preferred stock. The big advantage to the deal from Uber’s point of view is that the investment pretty much rules out any investment in rival Lyft from Softbank. Locking Lyft out of funding from Softbank came at a price, though, as the sale of existing shares values Uber at $48 billion, a haircut from the valuation of $69 billion in Uber’s last round of financing.”

A typical post looks much like this entry from today: “10:20 a.m.: Cook County, the county that includes Chicago, has announced a lawsuit against makers of prescription opioid painkillers such as OxyContin and Percocet. The lawsuit cites the companies’ “coordinated, sophisticated, and highly deceptive marketing.” Cook County has seen a 70% increase in opioid-related deaths between 2015 and 2016.”

A typical post looks much like this entry from today: 11:20 a.m.: Continued weak inflation in November. The PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) index rose 0.2% in November from October. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had expected a 0.3% month over month increase. The Core PCE was up just 0.1% month over month. “The PCE Index is the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure. Year over year the Core PCE Index is up 1.5%.”
