In my daily trawling through the market I come upon lots of tidbits of knowledge that I think are important to investors but that don’t justify a full post. I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. Typical items resemble this post from today: “10:40 a.m.: Softbank Group along with Tencent Holdings, Sequoia Capital and Dragoneer Investment Group are buying existing shares in Uber from current shareholders. In addition Softbank will buy $1.25 billion in new preferred stock. The big advantage to the deal from Uber’s point of view is that the investment pretty much rules out any investment in rival Lyft from Softbank. Locking Lyft out of funding from Softbank came at a price, though, as the sale of existing shares values Uber at $48 billion, a haircut from the valuation of $69 billion in Uber’s last round of financing.”

A typical post looks much like this entry from today: 11:20 a.m.: Continued weak inflation in November. The PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) index rose 0.2% in November from October. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had expected a 0.3% month over month increase. The Core PCE was up just 0.1% month over month. “The PCE Index is the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure. Year over year the Core PCE Index is up 1.5%.”

That brings year over year growth to 2.5%. Economists had expected year over year growth of 1.5%. A 2.5% growth rate for Japan is stunningly high. At this point a year ago the economy was growing at a 1.4% rate.”

A typical blog post resembles this one from today: “11:20 a.m.: Wall Street isn’t nearly so positive on CVS Health’s  (CVS) $69 billion bid to acquire Aetna (AET) now that it has seen how the company plans to pay for the buy. CVS plans to issue $44.8 billion in new debt and $21 billion in new equity in addition to using $4.1 billion of cash on hand. Shares of CVS are down 5.2%.”

In August the index was ahead 1.4% year over year. The core index, which excludes food and energy, was uo 1.3% year over year. Nothing here to change the odds on the Federal Reserve raising interest rates at its December 13 meeting.”

It includes items like this from today: “10:40 a.m.: A teardown by iFixit showed that the Visual Core chip from Google’s new Pixel 2 phone is built on an Intel (INTC) chip. A Google spokesperson told CNBC that the “Pixel Visual Core is a custom designed process from Google” that the company built “with Intel.” Google also confirmed the Alphabet’s Wayne self-driving technology uses Intel chips.

Oh no! for oil prices–U.S. shale producers hedge above $50 a barrel

U.S. oil producers have hedged more of their oil production in the last two weeks than in the last four to five months. In August a sample of 43 large and small U.S. producers had hedged just 23% of 2018 production. But now with West Texas Intermediate back above $52 a barrel, producers have rushed to finish hedging 2017 production, and the bulk of their 2018 production, and started to establish hedges for 2019.
