In my daily trawling through the market I come upon lots of tidbits of knowledge that I think are important to investors but that don’t justify a full post. I’ve decided to start compiling these notes here each day in a kind of running mini blog that I’m calling Notes You Need. Items include posts like this from today: “Japanese investment bank Mizuho reports that its field checks of Apple’s (AAPL) Japanese suppliers show slower-than-anticipated improvements in yields for iPhone X components. In particular the 3D-sensing module remains a bottleneck. Yields have improved on the OLED panels for the phone’s screen. Mizuho lowers its forecast for total aggregate production by about 1% and notes that ASPs (average selling price) could come in below forecast. Mizuho notes that in September quarter ASPs at $618 were below consensus of $638.”

Before the recently concluded 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, President Xi Jinping had repeatedly stressed his goal of doubling China’s real GDP from its 2010 level by 2020. The goal was absent from Xi’s three-hour speech at the opening of the meeting.

China’s government has announced its new economic growth target for 2017. At “around” 6.5% it’s just a bit lower than the 2016 target of 6.5% to 7%. China’s GDP grew by 6.7% in 2016. The slight decline in the headline growth target is echoed throughout the government’s planning.

Overnight the Shanghai Composite Index fell 7% before new circuit breakers halted trading on the exchange. Other global indexes followed Shanghai’s lead–without matching all the volatility seen in Shanghai.

Why the shift in market reaction? One possibility is that it’s arbitrary and a reflection of a trendless market. On the other hand, there’s the possibility that it shows an increasing skepticism about the power of central banks (and governments) to guide economies to higher growth.
