Oil prices fell again in February with crude dropping another $2 a barrel on the month. Crude prices really didn’t show much of a trend in February as worries over an economic slowdown caused by higher interest rates battled signs of tighter supply. The reading range for the month was the smallest since July 2021. Signs of increased demand from China and the continued bite of sanctions against Russia point to gains for oil in coming months.

On Friday, shares of Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) fell on a Bloomberg story reporting rumored talks between the Permian Basin oil shale producer and Appalachian natural gas producer Range Resources (RRC). On Monday shares of Pioneer rebounded as the company denied that it was in acquisition talks. The lesson? Investors really don’t want Pioneer to spend money on acquiring more assets.

Wednesday, February 22, Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) reported better-than-expected adjusted earnings for the fourth quarter of 2022 while revenues came up short of Wall Street estimates. So it wasn’t much of a surprise to most investors–although some of us were hoping that Intel (INTC) would hold its dividend steady after a big bond offering in the last few weeks. But today Intel cuts its dividend by 66% to 12.5 cents a share from a prior 36.5 cents. The stock dropped only 2.26% on that big news.

After the market close on February 21, cyber security company Palo Alto Networks (PANW) reported fiscal second-quarter 2023 year-over-year revenue growth of 26% to $1.7 billion. Billings in the quarter also rose by 26% to $2.0 billion. The rock-solid consistency of revenue and billings growth in this quarter and as projected for the rest of the year got a cheer from the market. In after-hours trading shares gained 8.56%.

Today I posted my two-hundred-and-thirty-ninth YouTube video: Quick Pick Cameco Today’s Quick Pick: Cameco (NYSE: CCJ). I’m not a fan of nuclear power. Relying on an energy source that produces waste that will remain radioactive for thousands of years when we have no real solution for long-term disposal, is, to me, not the best idea. However, we’ve waited so long to deal with climate change and we still haven’t upgraded the grid so that wind and solar can replace current baseload power sources, so nuclear power will remain in the mix longer than expected. And might even see an increase in its share of the electricity market. Cameco is one of the largest producers of uranium in the world. The company has a lot of capacity that it can bring back into production since it shut down a number of mines when demand for uranium was down. The stock is up about 35% in the last year, 30% year to date, and 16% in the last month. For the trailing 12 months, the company was actually profitable ($116 million), following a loss in 2021 and 2020. You may want to wait for another dip in the general stock market for this one, or dollar cost average into it, but for global warming solutions, this is a good play since we’ve dragged our feet until we’re in an emergency that will require non-optimum, shall we say, solutions. I’ll be adding the stock to my Jubak Picks Portfolio tomorrow, February 22.

Today, Wednesday, February 8, Equinor (EQNR) reported a record $74.9 billion adjusted operating profit for 2022. That more than doubled the previous record. If you’re looking to add an energy stock to your portfolio ahead of a year that looks likely to be a good one for energy stocks, I’d suggest Equinor. I’ll be adding it to my Jubak Picks Portfolio tomorrow with a target price of $40 a share.

The possibility that Intel (INTC) would cut its dividend has been hanging over the stock price since the company announced one of the ugliest quarters I’ve seen in a while on January 26. No question why. Intel’s adjusted free cash flow was a negative $4.075 for the full 2022 year. And with the company looking to invest heavily in new fabs, the $6 billion a year in dividend payouts looked like a potential source of investing cash. And certainly, you wouldn’t want to buy into a stock paying 5.09% (as Intel did today) if the company was about to cut its dividend. But a dividend cut looks less likely today.

This week’s Trend of the Week: Christmas? Bah Humbug! Harris recently did a poll for Bloomberg that showed 60% of the people polled said they would be buying fewer gifts for fewer people this year due to inflation. That same poll said that 60% of respondents said they’d be cutting back on holiday travel, and 33% said they were skipping gift-giving completely. We’ll skip the discussion about the spirit of Christmas, and look at how this is going to affect retail and airline earnings in January. Retailers like Costco, Wal-Mart, and Kohl’s have already warned Wall Street that sales will not be great for Christmas, but even with that warning, retailers could surprise investors with lower-than-expected numbers. Costco announced its fiscal first-quarter earnings on December 10 with sales going up 6%. Although they were warned that margins were going to be soft, Wall Street was expecting 6.9% same-store growth and punished the shares accordingly with a huge drop in the stock. Costco is a great retailer for this moment, with affordable pricing on a wide range of goods and gas sales bringing in traffic. If Costco’s trending this way, I think we can expect the same from companies like Walmart and Kohl’s. It’s likely the airlines will take a hit as well, with the drop in holiday travel. For now, drink your wassail and try not to think about impending January earnings!

Granted it’s only a forecast, but yesterday General Motors (GM) forecast that its electric vehicle models will start generating a profit in 2025. The company now projects free cash flow of as much as $11 billion, compared with prior guidance of $7 billion to $9 billion. Electric-vehicle sales should top $50 billion in 2025, GM said. The Detroit-based company plans to build 400,000 EVs in North America from 2022 through the first half of 2024. Production capacity will reach 1 million units annually in North America in 2025. By 2025, its family of electric crossover SUVs, pickups, and luxury models will compete in segments that represent about 70% of the electric vehicle industry volume, the company projects.

When I put together my Special Report: “5 Safe Dividend Stocks Paying 6% or More,” one key requirement was that the company showed a long track record of raising dividends every year and the clear potential to continue to raise dividends every year. That formula could turn a 6% annual dividend yield now into 8% or 9% or even more over the next ten years. A safe almost guaranteed 10% yield at the end of 10 years strikes me as a very attractive prospect, especially given how tough I think the financial markets are going to be over the next five years or more. (For more on that outlook see my recently revised Special Report: “Your Best Investment Strategy for the Next Five Years.”) But I realized, looking at all the high-yield stocks that didn’t make the cut for that report that the requirement for a high-probability trend of higher dividends each year for the next 10 years, that this requirement left a lot of stocks paying very attractive high dividends now on the cutting room floor. Stocks paying 8% or more got left off the list because I didn’t see a commitment at the company to continued dividend increases every year or enough growth in free cash flow to make it possible for a company to raise or maintain its dividend through the ups and downs of the business cycle. These stocks paying 8% or more were very safe bets to continue paying that yield for the next year or two. But 10 years? Too much uncertainty. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t own some of these stocks now. An 8% or better yield for a couple of years is a very attractive prospect given how uncertain the economy and the stock market are right now. And an investor has a very simple remedy if a company looks like it can’t or isn’t committed to sustaining that yield. Sell the stock. So with all that in mind, I’ve put together a list of five “outlier” dividend stocks paying 8% or more at a time when the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (SPY) has a yield of just 1.6%.
