Wednesday’s rally in the market’s most speculative stocks is the last straw for me: I said I’d be a seller into any post-Fed rally–but what specifically would I be selling? Here are the 12 stocks I’d sell now

Wednesday’s rally in the market’s most speculative stocks is the last straw for me: I said I’d be a seller into any post-Fed rally–but what specifically would I be selling? Here are the 12 stocks I’d sell now

The rally on February 15 sure looked like a speculative blowout of the kind that often signals a market top. For me, it was the last straw and I’m selling into the rally. This post tells you what I’m selling and how I arrived at these decisions. But first, a few words on Wednesday’s move.

Buy on the rumor, sell on the news: I’m selling ChargePoint out of my Volatility Portfolio tomorrow, August 9

As I referenced in my post “What to sell and when in this Bear Market Rally,” I’m applying the old Wall Street advice of buy on the rumor and sell on the news to electric vehicle charging stocks. Specifically to ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT)Like just about any stock associated with controlling global climate change, ChargePoint soared ahead on the surprise deal that revived “green spending” in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. There’s money in that bill for promoting electric vehicles and for solar and wind power. (And let’s not forget big bucks for hydrogen power, too.) That bill has now passed the Senate (amazingly) and looks almost certain to pass the House of Representatives, where Speak Nancy Pelosi can, I think, be counted on to hold her slim majority together. Which means all that potential spending good news for stocks in this sector is now out there.

The speculative money is alive and “well” during Bear Market rally days

The speculative money is alive and “well” during Bear Market rally days

Friday, June 17, was a modestly up day for most of the indexes. The Standard & Poor’s 500, for example, gained 0.22% and the NASDAQ was up a stronger 1.43%. (The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.13% on the day.) But you’d never know that the indexes were up only modestly if you checked the gains on the most speculative stocks in the market. Meme favorites GameStop (GME) and AMC Entertainment (AMC) were up 7.48% and 6.28%, respectively. But the speculative gains didn’t stop there.

Chargepoint misses on earnings but sees 100% growth in revenue from electric vehicle charging market

Yesterday, May 31, after the close electric-vehicle-charging company ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT) reported a huge jump in revenue–way above Wall Street and management projections–but a big miss on earnings. Today, June 1, the shares finished down 2.66%. Sales for the fiscal first quarter of 2023 came to $81.6 million. The Wall Street consensus projection called for $75.7 million. Management had guided investors to expect $72 million to $77 million for the quarter. In the first fiscal quarter of 2022, revenue was $40.51 million. That’s a year over year revenue growth rate of 101% But…

U.S. to ban Russian oil and natural gas–Brent hits $131 a barrel, WTI $127

The United States will ban imports of oil and natural gas from Russia, President Biden announced Tuesday. U.S. allies in Europe also announced action on the energy front with a plan to cut natural gas imports from Russia by two-thirds in 2022. Even though the White House has said that the long-lead time on the ban would give importers and consumers time to find other sources by the end of 2022, oil futures soared today with the price of West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. crude benchmark, climbing to $126.98 a barrel, up 6.35%, for April delivery as of 12:30 p.m. in New York. International benchmark Brent creek rose 6.52%to $131.24 a barrel for April delivery.

Please watch my new YouTube video: Trend of the Week Electric Vehicle Charging Stocks

I’m starting up my videos on JubakAM.com again–this time using YouTube as a platform. My one-hundredth-and fourth YouTube video “Trend of the Week: Electric Vehicle Charging Stocks” went up today. This week I’m talking about electric vehicle charging stocks. You may have heard me talk about these in the past. However, these stocks have been hammered so far in 2022, so right now they are cheap. Why are they worth buying? Because we know that the U.S. government has already allocated $5 billion to build charging stations around the country. We haven’t seen the upside of that yet! I currently own EVGO and CHPT in my portfolios.

Remember that volatility creates volatility–time to look to some tax loss selling (like Nektar)

With the VIX “fear index” falling back closer to “normal” levels–it dropped to 21.89 yesterday from 31.12 on December 1–it sure feels like the extreme volatility of the end of November and early December is on the ebb. The move to yesterday’s 21.89 close from December 1 was was a surge of 30% in the CBOE S&P 500 Volatility Index in a week. This move away from panic follows on a jump in the “fear index” in the week from November 24 to December 1 of 67% in the opposite direction. I’d be surprised if we don’t see another surge in volatility in the rest of December or in January with what promises to be a crazy earnings season, but even if volatility holds at something like today’s level–slightly elevated from the historical averages but in the rough ballpark–don’t forget that volatility has a long tail. Volatility, in fact, creates volatility. And not least of all in individual stocks.
