In the third quarter electric vehicle sales in the United States jumped to more than 300,000 for the first time, Cox Automotive reported today. Electric vehicle sales were up 50% year over year in the quarter. And electric vehicles made up 7.9% of total industry sales. It’s not surprising that as vehicle sales volumes have surged, market leader Tesla (TSLA) has lost market share.

After swiftly abandoning its 0-Covid lockdown policy–without replacing it with anything resembling a national Covid protocol–China is facing a Covid disaster that could see more than 1 million deaths from the coronavirus in 2023. That would put China’s death toll from the Pandemic on par with that of the United States, which has seen 1.1 million people die from Covid19 since the pandemic began. The magnitude of the disaster is actually understated by that comparison since China’s comparable death toll would be condensed into a much shorter period than that in the United States. We don’t know with any degree of precision what a pandemic outbreak like this would do to the economies of China and the world. But we can make some reasonable guesses.

When I started Special Report for how to Buy on the Dip, What to Buy on the Dip and When to Buy on the Dip I was only looking to have three strategies (and 10 picks). The more I look at the current market, the more complex it seems with more moving parts that could generate an Oh, No! moment for this stock or that stock. Yes, we want to buy on the dip. Whenever we get a significant dip. (And significant to me is 5% or more in the major indexes–and 10% or more in specific sectors.) But, we need new strategies for buying on the dip that take into account the market’s valuation problem, the central bank tightening that looks to be in the cards, and the real possibility of a dip in growth below forecasts in 2022. I’ve got fouir strategies to suggest for buying in this market on these dips. And 14 picks to use to execute those strategies.

I’d call the policy being followed by the People’s Bank in the China Evergrande crisis “Try to support the markets but see how little we can get away with.” Today Chins’s central bank supplied liquidity to the country’s financial markets with an injection of short-term cash. But the move fell far short of the kind of “Charge of the People’s vanguard” that the bank has mustered in earlier crises. And, importantly, there was no big statement of market support to go with today’s actions.
