Today’s Quick Pick is ASML Holding (ASML). ASML Holding is a chip equipment maker, specializing in high-end ultraviolet lithography. The stock released an impressive earnings report on Tuesday which sent the stock up 8.5% on that day. It’s up about 18% since I recommended the stock back in December. However, please remember, chip stocks and especially chip equipment stocks are cyclicals. They do well when demand is high, and then dip back down when demand is low. We’re currently in a big up cycle for chips with demand for new AI chips continuing to rise. ASML expects 2024 to maintain that upward swing and the stock is rising as expected. The thing I want to point out is how we know cyclical PEs to behave. The highest point for a cyclical PE tends to be down at the bottom, and as the stock goes up, the PE should go down. At the moment, the market is not at all focused on fundamentals and what we’re seeing is cyclical stocks trading like growth stocks. ASML is not a growth (forever) stock, but it’s currently trading at a PE of 39, the same as Microsoft, a definite growth stock (for comparison). There will be a top for ASML, it may not be 2024 but make sure you’re looking at fundamentals even if no one else in the market is.

Shares of ASML Holding (ASML) closed up 8.85% today after the company reported record orders for its chip-making equipment in the fourth quarter. ASML sales grew 12.5% year-over-year. And orders more than tripled from the third-quarter. I added shares of ASML Holding to my long-term 50 Stocks Portfolio on December 12, 2023. The position is up 17.6% since then as of the close on January 24.

GREATER Growth Stock Pick #7: ASML Holding (ASML). ASML Holding is priced like a stock that owns 90% of the market for cutting edge photo lithography chip-making equipment. I want to own this stock as one of my 10 GREATER Growth Stocks, but I worry about paying that kind of multiple (35 times trading 12-month earnings per share), especially ahead of what is shaping up as a challenging 2024 for chip equipment makers in general and ASML in particular. But 2025 looks like a great year for chip equipment makers in general and ASML in particular. So timing is the key issue on buying this one.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM), the company that makes the chips for everyone from Apple to Nvidia, has told suppliers to delay some deliveries amid concerns about slowing chip demand, according to a new report Friday from Reuters. The company has told large chip-equipment suppliers to delay some deliveries, Reuters reported. The company is “increasingly nervous” about demand from its customers, the report said.Last week, the company said its August revenue fell 13.5% from last year but rose 6.2% from the prior month. As you might imagine, the news wasn’t greeted with cheers by investors in technology stocks.

The Chips for America Act looks headed to a cloture vote in the Senate on Thursday. As the $52 billion bill now stands, it includes $39 billion for semiconductor companies to “build, expand, or modernize domestic facilities.” Here are the winners as I see them.

My second Fundamental Value Pick in my Special Report 5 Fundamental Value Picks is Applied Materials (AMAT). Let’s go to the classic formula for calculating fundamental value of an asset, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, known affectionately by generations of MBA students as CAPM. Don’t worry. I’m not going to force you into the sometimes arcane mathematics of CAPM. Instead I’m going to use the formula as a framework for understanding what matters in calculating a fundamental value for a stock–as well for understanding how these factors fit together.

Right now investors and traders are getting a crash course in how vulnerable global supply chains are to disruption–especially when they become really extended. And how a supply chain disruption can ripple out in unexpected directions thanks to the complexity of many key products.
First, the Pandemic took a hammer to the complicated logistical systems required to get Commodity A to Sub-assembler B in order to make Consumer good C that would show up for sale around the world. Just in time inventory, it turned out, didn’t work very well when nothing arrived on time. Second, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has–or at least it should have–reminded us that global supply chains can resemble Whack-A-Mole.

Here we go again. It’s not that we really have any more information about the Omicron Variant–we certainly don’t know what its effects will be on global economic acuity–but just as fears that the Covid-19 variant would send the world back into lockdown crushed stocks last week, this morning, December 7, a belief that Omicron won’t be all that bad has taken root and stocks are soaring in morning action.

After yesterday’s selling, we’re getting a bounce today. But, significantly, the bounce in stocks is much less “bouncy” than the Monday bounce from Friday’s plunge.

Today’s installment includes one hedge (on the ViX) and one stock pick (Lam Research.) Now if you’ve been following along with the logic that I’ve laid out in this Special Report, you know that stocks face months of potential volatility around the Fed’s June 16 meeting (What will the Fed say about ending its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases?), the August global central bankers confab in Jackson Hole (Will the Fed use the occasion, as it has done in the past, to indicate a coming change in interest rate policy?), the Fed’s September 22 meeting (Will the Fed be content to say nothing with the next “important” meeting not until December?) and then the central bank’s December 15 meeting.) That’s a large number of occasions that could set the stock market to worrying again. And then, of course, there’s OPEC and the price of oil, the battle over the recently announced Biden budget, the continued logjam on infrastructure spending, and fact that the pandemic is still running at full speed in countries such as India (and who knows what the return of cold weather and forced winter “togetherness” will do to infection rates in the developed economies of the northern hemisphere.) At 16.74 on the VIX, you don’t need a panic to produce a profit on higher volatility. The VIX was at 22.18 on May 19. And then there are the even higher VIX levels of 27.59 on May 12, 28.57 on Marcy 4, and 28.89 on February 25.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM), the globes biggest independent chip foundry, said last week that it expects the chip shortage that has left automakers scrambling for silicon and cutting back production will be over by the end of the third quarter. Whether that’s good news or not depends on how much weight you give to this company’s projections.

In my Trick or Trend post on Saturday, March 27, I argued that the increasingly serious chip shortage experienced by car makers was bad for car stocks (since car companies are having to cut production), but good for chip makers who concentrate in the auto sector (since they are seeing rising demand and increasing pricing power) and even better for chip equipment makers (since they were already on a roll to meet higher demand for equipment to expand chip production and are now very likely to see that extra demand for chip equipment run higher and longer.)I already own shares of two chip makers that are seeing rising demand and increasing pricing power: NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) and Infineon Technologies (IFNNY). I own NXP in my Volatility Portfolio–up 97.16% since June 2, 2020. I own Infineon in my Jubak Picks Portfolio–up 81.38% since May 6, 2019. And I also own shares of chip equipment maker Applied Materials in my Jubak Picks and 50 Stocks portfolios. Applied Materials has been a member of my Jubak Picks Portfolio since January 14, 2021 (for a gain of 21.59% as of the close on March 26) and of my long-term 50 Stocks Portfolio since December 31, 2017 (for a gain of 151.64%.) Today, Monday March 29, I’m adding shares of ASML (ASML), the leading producer of lithography equipment to draw circuits onto chips. That stock gained 7.14% on Friday and is now up 28.28% for 2021 to date.
