Look for a big earnings test for regional banks and a feW clues about consumer goods, airlines, and autos. Last week ended with great earnings reports from Big Banks JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC) and Citigroup (C). Big Bank earnings continue this week with Bank of America (BAC) and Goldman Sachs (GS) reporting on Tuesday. But the important news for the financial sector will come from the dozens of earnings reports from regional banks.

Today, October 12, I’m making Nidec, the Japanese company that is the leader in the market for small electric motors and a growing presence in the market for motors and drive trains for electric vehicles, the second pick in my Special Report: 10 Contrarian Bargains to Buy Now.

In the third quarter electric vehicle sales in the United States jumped to more than 300,000 for the first time, Cox Automotive reported today. Electric vehicle sales were up 50% year over year in the quarter. And electric vehicles made up 7.9% of total industry sales. It’s not surprising that as vehicle sales volumes have surged, market leader Tesla (TSLA) has lost market share.

a lot of individual stocks are cheap right now, I’d argue. 180 of the 500 stocks in the S&P 500 trade now at the same or lower price that they commanded a year ago. And for many individual stocks the performance is even worse. For example, Luminar Technologies (LAZR), a maker of LIDAR safety and navigation equipment for cars, is down 40% in the last three months. Albemarle, the world’s leading supplier of lithium, is off 27% in the last three months. Nidec (NJDCY), a Japanese maker of small electric motors and electric vehicle drive trains, is down 13% in the last three months. I’d argue that these and the rest of the 10 Contrarian bargain stocks that I’m going to recommend in this Special Report share a number of characteristics that have led to their losses over the last few months or longer.

It could be a rough day ahead for Tesla (TSLA).The company has broken four quarterly car delivery records in a row, but then the results for the current quarter–which could be announced as early as Monday, Ocroer 2, are likely to show that deliveries have slipped. Not seriously. But when a stock is trading at 70 times tailing 12 month earnings per share in a nervous market, a stumble is all it takes to send a share price down. And this nervous market doesn’t need bad news from one of its leaders.

Today’s Trend of the Week is This is What Deflation Looks Like. Last week, Ford announced it’s cutting the price of the Ford F-150 electric truck, the F-150 Lightning, by nearly $10,000. The prices had gone up when supplies were low, but now, Ford says that they’ve cut production costs, so they’re able to cut prices. Maybe. That’s one explanation anyway. But, the news came as Tesla’s long-awaited truck appears to be finally hitting the market (sometime this year.) There is an over-supply of electric vehicles in general as more and more car makers have pivoted to the EV, and the sector hasn’t grown as fast as the production. In order to keep market share in a young-fast growing industry, companies, like Ford, will cut prices. This is as an early sign of a potential deflationary period. The timing of a transition from an inflationary environment to a deflationary environment will depend largely on global climate change. A lot of money will have to be spent on building, or rebuilding infrastructure, which could stress supply, putting the brakes on deflation. Keep an eye out for my special report called, Investing in Global Climate Catastrophe for more on inflation, deflation and interest rates. For now, the Ford announcement gives us the first hint of deflation in a critical sector of the global economy.

Tesla (TSLA) delivered a big beat over Wall Street estimates when the company reported second quarter earnings after the close yesterday. The company reported earnings of 91 cents a share, well above the Wall Street projection of 80 cents a share. But in after hours trading, the stock still fell by 4.20%. Today, July 20, the shares are down 7.17% as of 10:45 a.m. New York time. And this comes despite another record quarter of unit sales. The problem?

Tesla’s (TSLA) first-quarter earnings, reported yesterday April 19, after the market close, met expectations. But first-quarter automotive gross profit margins came in worse than expected. Tesla reported a profit of 85 cents a share, meeting expectations, on sales of $23.33 billion, just a touch below forecasts for $23.67 billion. Tesla’s other business generated a record $303 million in gross profit. Tesla deployed 3.9 gigawatt hours of battery storage in the quarter, up about 300% year over year. But, automotive gross profit margins, excluding regulatory credits, came in below 16%, down from about 21%

I expect the earnings season story for the coming week to continue to be dominated by banks. But whereas last week, Friday specifically, was all about big banks, this coming week will be dominated by earnings reports from regional and smaller banks. That’s the very kind of banks that are the focus of worry about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. We will, however, get a sprinkle of earnings reports from non-bank names just to add some spice to the week.

Yesterday’s investors day could have been a huge positive that sent Tesla (TSLA) shares soaring today. Instead, because the company and its CEO Elon Musk once again over-promised and underdelivered, investors went away disappointed and today, March 2, the stock was down 5.85% at the close.

The rally on February 15 sure looked like a speculative blowout of the kind that often signals a market top. For me, it was the last straw and I’m selling into the rally. This post tells you what I’m selling and how I arrived at these decisions. But first, a few words on Wednesday’s move.
