When I bought shares of Apple (AAPL) in my Jubak Picks and Volatility Portfolios, I was looking for gains from the end of the year rally (which kind of fizzed out) and the traditional Santa Claus rally (which came through as expected) to drive shares higher in the short term. Since that November 23, 2021 pick, shares of Apple, as of the close today January 4, were up 12% to $179.70, just above my $179 target price for this short-term trade.

This earnings season looks so tricky that I’m going to sit it out rather than attempt to leverage moves in the shares of reporting companies by purchasing either Call (a bet that the stock will go up) or Put (a bet that the stock will go down) options.

As of the close in New York today Ford Motor (F) shares were up 11.67% after the company announced it would nearly double production capacity to meet demand for its upcoming F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. The price of $24.31 is a 21-year high for Ford’s stock.

In other years this would clearly be the time to jump into China stocks. What we have right now is a classic, tried-and-true set up for big gains from buying China stocks. With a “but” or two that suggests a cautious strategy. But I will be buying shares of Tencent Holdings and the FXI ETF on Monday, January 3.

Li-Cycle Holdings LICY), a recycler of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, has entered into a non-binding letter of intent to supply LG Chem, Korea’s largest diversified chemical company and LG Energy Solution, a leader in the market for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, with 20,000 metric tons of nickel from recycled waters over the 10 year beginning in 2023. Upon signing of the final agreement, LG Chem and LG Energy Solutions will together make a $50 million buy of shares in Li-Cycle.

Ford Motor (F) CEO Jim Farley said yesterday, December 9, that pre-orders for the soon-to-launch F-150 Lightning pickup truck are so great that it had to stop taking reservations. Ford shares were up 9.81% today, Friday, December 10 as of the New York close.

CVS Health (CVS) will raise its annual dividend by 10% to $2.20 from $2.00 effective with the dividend payout scheduled for February 1. The company has also authorized a $10 billion share buyback program. The company also raised guidance for the full 2021 year to revenue of at least $290.3 billion and earnings of at least $8.00 a share.

Johnson Controls International (JCI) raised its quarterly dividend to 34 cents a share, a 26% increase, effective with the dividend payment payable on January 14, 2022. (The record date for owning the shares in order to collect the dividend is December 20, 2021.)
