Lithium Americas closes $2.3 billion DOE loan–stock climbs and then gives it all back

Yesterday, Lithium Americas (LCA) announced that it had closed a $2.26 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program. The funding is earmarked for the construction of processing facilities at the Thacker Pass lithium project in Humboldt County, Nevada. Thacker Pass is currently North America’s largest known lithium resource. The stock jumped almost 5% yesterday on the news. It fell 8.87% today to $4.11 a share. Shares of lithium market leader Albemarle (ALB) rose 8.25% on Friday to close at $102.O9 on speculation in Australia that mining giant Rio Tinto (RIO) will pursue a major lithium deal with Albemarle cited as a possible target. Shares of Arcadium Lithium (ALTM), Lithium Americas (LAC) and Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM) also jumped, +10%, +7.1% and +3.1%, respectively. The speculation makes sense to me.

And lithium stocks, depressed by low prices as a result of oversupply in the lithium market, were off to he races today.

Lithium Americas begins construction on Thacker Pass lithium mine

Lithium Americas (LAC) isn’t letting any grass grow under its feet. Just a day after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused a request for an emergency injunction that would have blocked construction at the Thacker Pass, Nevada, the proposed site of what could become the largest North American source of lithium, the company announced that it had begun construction of the massive strip mine.
