Albemarle, lithium stocks jump on buy-out speculation

Shares of lithium market leader Albemarle (ALB) rose 8.25% on Friday to close at $102.O9 on speculation in Australia that mining giant Rio Tinto (RIO) will pursue a major lithium deal with Albemarle cited as a possible target. Shares of Arcadium Lithium (ALTM), Lithium Americas (LAC) and Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM) also jumped, +10%, +7.1% and +3.1%, respectively. The speculation makes sense to me.

Lithium stocks jump on reports of possible cut in Chinese supply

In a report today, September 11, analysts at UBS reported the potential suspension by Chinese electric vehicle battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) of production at its massive lepidolite lithium mine in eastern China. The suspension would amount to an 8%, or roughly 5,000-6,000 metric tons, reduction of China’s monthly lithium carbonate equivalent production. And lithium stocks, depressed by low prices as a result of oversupply in the lithium market, were off to he races today.

Lithium Americas begins construction on Thacker Pass lithium mine

Lithium Americas (LAC) isn’t letting any grass grow under its feet. Just a day after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused a request for an emergency injunction that would have blocked construction at the Thacker Pass, Nevada, the proposed site of what could become the largest North American source of lithium, the company announced that it had begun construction of the massive strip mine.
