My one-hundredth-and-thirty-fourth YouTube video “Quick Pick Middleby” went up today. My Quick Pick this week is Middleby (MIDD), a manufacturer of restaurant equipment. I’ve been following the company for 20 years, during which time they’ve pursued basically the same slow and steady strategy of acquiring smaller players in their market area (where they are the largest player) and them using Middleby’s marketing leverage to grow sales at the acquisition. The stock took a hit on its recent announcement that it expects to feel the impacts of inflation and supply chain difficulties. It’s difficult to catch a falling knife, but I think this stock is a good buy long term and I am adding it back to my 50 Stocks Portfolio, which has a holding period of 5 plus years.

Last week PepsiCo (PEP) declared a quarterly dividend of $1.15 a share, up about 7% from $1.075 a share. That brings the dividend yield up to 2.7%, almost exactly Coca-Cola’s (KO) 2.72% yield. On the basis of that yield and the pricing power that the company demonstrated in first quarter earnings I’m adding the stock to my Dividend Portfolio. I think it’s a good pick for a period of high inflation and uncertain economic growth.

It’s likely that the current “disagreement” about how fast Russian oil production is falling will be resolved in favor of “pretty fast” despite spin from Moscow. Which would mean that Friday’s jump in oil prices–West Texas Intermediate crude gained 2.165 to $110.60 a barrel–will continue. And so will Friday’s rally in oil stocks. ConocoPhilips (COP), for example, was up 4.69% on Friday. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) gained 5.35%.

For a day, Friday, May 6, at least the pattern of divergence between consumer staples stocks and consumer discretionary stocks that has ruled much of 2022 reasserted itself. Now the question is How long will the pattern hold?

My one-hundredth-and-thirtieth YouTube video “Market gives Fed a razzberry” went up today. Yesterday, the Fed announced that it would raise rates by 50 basis points but that it was not looking to raise by 75 at the June or July meetings. In response, the market had a huge rally, especially in tech stocks, as it had b been widely assumed that those meetings would see the larger 75 basis-point increase. All that has changed today, when upon second thought the market no longer likes this news, with the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite giving back all the gains they made yesterday plus a little more. I look at a few specific stocks, like Amazon and Advanced Micro Devices, and talk about why I think the selloff in tech stocks is going to continue.

My one-hundredth-and-ninth-eighth YouTube video “Trend of the Week China’s back!” went up today. At the end of last week, the Chinese government sent signals that it would make moves to stimulate the slowing economy amid widespread lockdowns, as well as letting up slightly in its crackdown on internet companies. This has sent Chinese tech stocks soaring, with multiple percentage-point increases in a few hours. In this video, I look at Tencent (TCEHY), JD.com (JD), Alibaba (BABA) and Meituan (MPNGF) and talk about why this is an important trend to follow, but why we’ll only see these stocks go up in the short term before government pressure sends them back down.

All you have to do to find the high profits that will make the risk of investing in climate change stocks worthwhile is to focus on sectors (1) where the rewards are solid and the risk is quantifiable, (2) where companies are making profit the old-fashioned way by building out networks and then charging high rents to use them, by (3) carefully targeting a few technologies (wind and solar and hydrogen and electric cars) that will be part of any mix of solutions, and (4) by investing in bottlenecks that are likely to drive prices up (and provide good profits for companies that resolve the bottleneck.

My one-hundredth-and-twenty-eighth YouTube video “Quick Pick Alibaba” went up today. Alibaba (BABA) and other Chinese internet companies have been struggling recently under the pressure of a government crackdown. However, with the slowing of the Chinese economy due to ongoing Pandemic lockdowns, the government has signaled that it will let up a bit on this crackdown (and move to add more stimulus to the economy.) Not surprisingly the shares of these companies have picked up some momentum. This is not a long-term pick–the government can and will reverse this loosening. Get some profits on Alibaba while the getting’s good. (Which is why I’m adding it to my 12-18 month Jubak Picks Portfolio and not by long-term 50 Stocks Portfolio.
